Motorized curtains bring reliable daily movement to large, heavy or difficult-to-reach window treatments. They are especially useful for floor-to-ceiling glazing, double-height spaces, hotel rooms, bedrooms, cinemas and projects where curtains must operate as part of a wider lighting or automation scene.
Window & Wall specifies the curtain, heading, track and motor as one system. This is important because the motor must be selected according to the track length, curtain weight, opening direction, number of panels and expected frequency of use.
How a motorized curtain track works
A motorized curtain uses a purpose-built track with an internal drive belt and curtain carriers. The dedicated curtain motor connects to the track and moves the master carrier, which opens or closes the curtain smoothly along the calibrated path. It is different from the tubular motor used inside a roller blind tube.
The system can normally be centre-opening, left-stacking or right-stacking. Depending on the selected motor and track, features may include soft start and stop, touch motion, manual operation during a power interruption and adjustable intermediate positions.
Control options
- Remote control: operate one curtain, several tracks or a full room from single- or multi-channel controls.
- Wall switch: provide a fixed control point beside the entrance or window.
- App control: open and close curtains from a compatible hub and smartphone application.
- Schedules and scenes: coordinate curtains with lighting, blinds and other connected products.
- Automation integration: connect selected systems to third-party controllers when the correct interface or driver is available.
Wired power and project coordination
For new construction, the power location should be agreed before gypsum work and painting are completed. The motor side, socket or connection point, access for maintenance and curtain pocket dimensions all need to be coordinated. Retrofit solutions may be possible where wiring is unavailable, but they depend on track size, curtain weight and the selected system.
Curved tracks and large façades
Motorized tracks can be fabricated for selected curves and corner conditions, but the radius and geometry must be measured accurately. Large spans or heavy double-layer curtains may require a higher-capacity motor, separate tracks or multiple motors. We confirm these details during the technical survey rather than selecting a motor from width alone. A correctly programmed motor also moves the leading edge along the same path each time, helping the curtain retain a consistent stack.
